We have a fantastic display of AGA and Rayburn cookers and cookware and the store hosts regular Demonstrations on all aspects of AGA cooking. They start with the ‘A Day in the Life of an AGA’ which outlines the techniques all AGA owners need to get them started. If you have a favourite dish and you want to know how to cook it on the AGA come along to a Demonstration and you will find it easier than you ever thought possible. We also do specialised Demonstrations, so please see below for details of forthcoming events. Spaces, though, are limited so it is worth booking early to ensure your place.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: Easter Simnel Cake

Ingredients
6oz (175g) Light Muscovado Sugar
6oz (175g) Butter
6oz (175g) Self Raising Flour
3 Eggs
1oz (25g) Ground Almonds
2 Tbsp Milk
4oz (100g) Quartered Cherries
4oz (100g) Halved Cranberries
4oz (100g) Sultanas
4oz (100g) Diced Dried Apricots
2 Teaspoons of Mixed Spice
1 Lemon Rind
3 Tbsp Apricot Jam
1lb (450g) Marzipan
1 Beaten Egg

Method
1. Use a deep sided (preferably 8inch, 20cm) cake tin and grease the sides.  Line the base with a piece of Bake-O-Glide.
2. Mix the above ingredients in a large bowl and spoon half of it into your cake tin.
3. Level mixture off.
4. Take a third of the marzipan and roll it out in a circle to the size of the tin and place on top of the cake mix.
5. Spoon the second half of the above mix on top and level it off.

Slow Baking
Place the tin on a gridshelf in the simmering oven and bake for 6-8 hours when the cake will be golden brown.  To test, place a skewer into the centre of the cake and observe that it comes out clean.

Fast Baking (3 / 4 Oven Owners):
Place the tin on a grid shelf on the floor of the baking oven.  Bake for between 1 1/2 - 2 hours approx, turning once.  Keep an eye on it and if it gets too brown, place the cold plain shelf onto the second set of runners (above the cake) to protect it.  You might also put a piece of Bake-O-Glide over it to protect it further.

6. Allow to cool.  Once cooled spread over the top with the jam.
7. Roll out half the remaining marzipan and sit on top of the cake.
8. Use the remainder of the marzipan to roll into balls and position around the top of the cake.
9. Brush the top of the cake with the beaten egg.
10. Bake at the top of the roasting oven for 5-7 minutes until the top of the cake is golden brown.
